Focus on Monitoring

Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the Committee on Environmental Protection, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research have a number of initiatives that require scientific monitoring. Antarctica New Zealand support a number of long term monitoring programmes across our research areas. This session provides an opportunity to review the research outcomes and successes of those programmes over the past decade and identify where our effort should be directed over the coming decade.

Science Policy Linkages
Time/Date: 3.00pm-4.30pm Monday 26th June
The Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM), the Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP), the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) are all addressing policy requirements for our work in Antarctica. In this session we will update the community on the challenges they are tackling over the next few years and discuss where New Zealand’s research effort has existing and potential new linkages. We will begin with a series of short presentations from scientists and policy advisors working within ATCM, CEP, CCAMLR and SCAR and will the move on to a discussion about science-policy linkages including future opportunities, facilitated by an expert panel.

NZARI Science Strategy
Time/Date: 3.30pm-5.30pm Wednesday 28th June
NZARI published its five-year plan in 2013. We will start the process of reviewing and revising the plan to ensure we are well placed for the next 5-years of effort. 

1718 Season Event Manager’s Workshop
Time/Date: 9.00am-4.00pm Thursday 29th June
This workshop is directed to those Event Managers who have events deploying to Antarctica in the 2017/18 season. We will be presenting information pertinent to this season – giving an overview of the season, any key messages about cargo, intercontinental flights, pre-season training required, medicals and support level agreements. In addition we will be providing clarification on Event Manager, institutional and Antarctica New Zealand accountabilities. A more detailed agenda will be sent out closer to the workshop.
